Civil Engineer Dr Gisela Kaiser who is appointed as a consultant to assist the NMB Metro with water management warns that Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is not taking the water shortage seriously enough.

According to Dr Kaiser we have weeks worth of water left in our dams and if we do not take this seriously our taps will run dry.

Wate Saving Tips

We need to start implementing water-saving measures to make sure that we are all doing our part in saving water. Below are water saving tips you can implement at home and in your business.

Home:

• Take short stop-start showers
• Don't let water run while waiting for it to warm up
• Only flush when you need to; use greywater for flushing
• Don't leave the tap running when brushing your teeth
• Use waterless hand sanitiser instead of washing your hands.
• Place a full bottle in your cistern to reduce each flush to a maximum of 6 litres (if you have no choice but to use municipal drinking water).
• Use a basin in the shower to collect all the water you shower with and use this to flush your toilet, either via the cistern or straight into the bowl.
• Find and fix leaks on your property. Leaks are such a waste of our precious water.
• Modify your gutters and downpipes to collect rainwater in containers.
• Fit a pool cover which significantly reduces evaporation. Recycle backwash water.

Business:

• Educate your staff on the importance of saving water. Make sure they understand how to save water both at home and at work. A good initiative is to start a water-saving
• Do regular water saving audits. This will allow the organisation to monitor how much water is being used and which areas of the organisation are using more water.
