I took the long way home from the City of the Big Smoke, Johannesburg, to head home to Durban for the Easter Holidays. And what better way than to do it in a family SUV, more specifically, in the Ford Territory. Excellent choice I add, judging from all members of the family who thoroughly enjoyed the spaciousness, loading capacity, the quietness of the cabin and then the smooth and very comfortable ride. Once all loaded up, the Territory is such a breeze to drive. From a drivers’ point of view, everything is just in the right place to make the journey that much better. The outside noise was almost non-existent as we hit the tar. The Territory is designed with plenty features elevate not just long trips but short commutes as well. Enjoyable!
Sunshine and the open road
There’s something special about letting the outdoors in, even if it involves taking a well-travelled route. The Territory’s panoramic sunroof is cleverly designed to slide back over the rear panel instead of under it, transforming our long commute in the SUV into a close-to-convertible experience. This innovative design maximised headroom for both front and rear passengers, ensuring that everyone gets a little bit of sunshine, whilst on the move. It’s akin to flooding the cabin with natural light and enjoy the sense of spaciousness and the sunshine as we cruised to Durban.
Dial into Connectivity
Thanks to Android Auto, streaming our music or using navigation in a Ford Territory is easy peasy, lemon squeezy. With Android Auto Both we were able to mirror any one of our smartphone’s functions and apps on the Territory’s infotainment’s display, providing a more user-friendly experience. The connections to the infotainment is fast and seamless, even when making calls. This efficiency means less time interacting with screens and fewer distractions. Using satellite navigation apps on the car’s display ensures accurate, real-time directions and traffic updates without needing to look at your phone. By integrating these systems, the Ford Territory combines cutting-edge technology with convenience, enhancing both your driving experience and road safety.
SUV appearance
The Territory had been redesigned to give that aesthetic yet robust look. The SUV commands attention with its redesigned stylish exteriors coming from the integrated honeycomb grille, signature daytime running lamps, and full LED headlights lowered towards the ground to expand lighting coverage and creates a more powerful look. The vehicle’s wheelbase and ground clearance draw a tougher stance for the Territory and allows the driver to stand out on the road, while providing good visibility and capability to take on different road conditions.
Engine and Economy
It’s a case of power meeting technology. Engine choices can be intimidating and even overwhelming but Ford has simplified the range with a new 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine, delivering both performance and efficiency. Matched with an advanced seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the Territory offers exceptional responsiveness and fuel economy needed on a long run. Selectable Drive Modes, activated by a new ‘Easy Swipe’ feature on the touchscreen will instantly optimize power, torque, and fuel efficiency according to driving conditions, making it versatile for various terrains, especially tar.
Safe for a long commute
The one aspect that is always needed for a long trip is for all passengers to be safe. Enhanced safety features include Blind Spot Information System with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Door Open Alarm, as well as Hill Descent Control and Enhanced Active Park Assist – offering a safer driving experience. Also, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Auto High Beam, Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Brake with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Aid and Collision Mitigation System are all there to ensure safe arrival at your destination.
Final Verdict
And so after six hours on the road which included a halfway stop, we arrived in Durban, all fresh. The Ford Territory is an ideal family SUV for both long commutes and short trips. Boot space was more than ample. It’s a lifestyle choice for families who prioritize comfort, safety, and style on their travels. The long way home, conquered with ease.
