Suspect found dead in EC police holding cell

Eastern Cape police have confirmed the death of a 42-year-old man in police custody.

Spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa says prior to his death, he was detained at Gelvandale SAPS on Wednesday, and was later found dead inside a holding cell.

She says he was arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder of three initiates in December 2023 in Ngqamakhwe.

An inquest docket was opened and is to be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
