The Eastern Cape provincial government has reported the deaths of seven people due to flooding caused by severe weather conditions in the province.
Bhisho also said that a search was ongoing for a minibus carrying school children that swept away earlier on Tuesday morning.
The South African National Taxi Council, SANTACO, said in a statement that a 22-seater bus belonging to one if its scholar transport operators was swept away by rising water levels at the Efafa bridge in the Lusikisiki area.
According to SANTACO three learners, who were clinging to a tree were rescued so far.
Premier Oscar Mabuyane lamented the loss of lives, saying he has dispatched members of the provincial executive committee to the OR Tambo district where most of the fatalities were reported.
The bodies of six people were found around Decoligny village in Mthatha, while the seventh body was recovered at Tsolo near Bedlana River.
Mabuyane emphasised the urgent need for caution, urging community members to avoid flooded areas, remain alert on slippery roads, and promptly report any hazards to authorities.
"This is a devastating reminder of nature’s force. We urge everyone to exercise extra caution in areas prone to flooding. Our disaster response teams are on high alert and committed to ensuring the community’s safety," he stated.
Bhisho said the severe weather conditions have also caused significant damage to road infrastructure, and the displacement of residents.
“As the weather persists, the province’s priority is the safety and well-being of residents, while working to mitigate damage to infrastructure and restore essential services,” Mabuyane said.
