PE murder suspect arrested

Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for a shooting in Helenvale in Port Elizabeth in which a man was killed and a six-year-old girl wounded.

Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said a second suspect was arrested for being in possession of a vehicle which had been reported stolen in Bethelsdorp in Port Elizabeth.

She said that the arrests by SAPS Kamesh followed another shooting incident in Rosedale in Uitenhage on Monday, but no one was injured.

“A Mazda Rustler was spotted with no registration plates and when the vehicle was pulled over, the driver alighted and started running. He was apprehended,” Naidu said.

She said the 25-year-old suspect was wanted for the murder of Lorenzo Nicholas in Kobus Road in Helenvale last November.

During that incident, a six-year-old girl was also hit by a stray bullet.

“It is alleged that the suspect was shooting at Nicholas when a bullet struck the child who was standing at a nearby shop in Fitchard Street. The child later complained of stomach-ache and was taken to hospital,” Naidu said.

She said X-rays revealed that a bullet had lodged in her abdomen.

Both suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
