Gqeberha police have arrested a suspect and confiscated abalone worth thousands of rand after a high-speed chase.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said officers officers were patrolling on the M4 freeway when they spotted a suspicious white Toyota Fortuner speeding past.

She said the members noticed that the vehicle seemed to be overloaded, and liquid was coming out from the boot.

"They then attempted to stop the vehicle at the intersection of the M4 freeway and Walmer Boulevard, however, the vehicle sped off down Strand Street and into Govan Mbeki Avenue."

During the chase the suspects attempted to push the police vehicle off the road as they raced towards Kwazakhele.

Janse Van Rensburg said when they turned into Booi Street two suspects jumped out and managed to flee.

The 32-year-old driver was however arrested, and after searching the vehicle police found 18 bags containing 138 units of shelled abalone, and 3276 units of de-shelled abalone with an estimated street value of R86 000.00.

The suspect was detained on charges of contravening the Marine Living Resource Act, the illegal possession and transportation of abalone without a permit, negligent driving and malicious property damage.

He is due to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate court soon.
