A 51-year-old East London woman died in a private hospital in Mthatha on Friday from injuries sustained during a gender-based violence incident.
Police spokesperson, Captain Welile Matyolo says the assault happened on 31 May, involving her 57-year-old male partner at an automotive dealership in Mthatha.
It is alleged that the deceased visited her boyfriend, who is an employee at the dealership, when the suspect physically assaulted her and took her to the hospital the following day.
Matyolo says the man claimed that his girlfriend was assaulted by unknown thugs near the dealership.
According to police information, the suspect visited the woman in the hospital on Friday, bringing her refreshments.
She subsequently became sick and later died in the afternoon.
Captain Matyolo says, based on preliminary investigations and utilizing available electronic evidence, the 57-year-old man was arrested on Friday evening.
A postmortem will determine the exact cause of the victim's death.
