Legal counsel for businessman, Rob Evans, continued the cross-examination of Warrant Officer Xolile Kato on Wednesday, the investigating officer in the murder case of Bay mother, Vanessa Van Rensburg.
Proceedings were delayed a little during the morning session on day nine of Evans' bail application underway in the Humansdorp Regional Court.
His attorney Paul Roelofse continued to question Kato on the evidence in the affidavits submitted to court by the state that is opposing his bail application.
He also wanted to know at what point in the investigation did his client become a suspect in the matter.
Evans has been charged with the murder of Van Rensburg after her body was found in his Oyster Bay holiday home on Easter Sunday.
He was also charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, and defeating the ends of justice.
He was arrested on 9 May.
Kato told the court that Evans became a suspect when the investigation revealed that only he and Van Rensburg were in the house on the night of the incident and that there had been an argument between them.
He also said that the co-owner of Algoa Plastics became a suspect in Van Rensburg's murder after the "versions" of the incident that he gave the arresting officer and that he also "contradicted" himself.
Kato said in his evidence-in-chief, that it would not be in the interest of justice to grant him bail. He also told the court that Evans was a flight risk, and could interfere with witnesses in the matter.
On Tuesday, additional statements were read into the court record from Van Rensburg’s sister, Claudette, who said; “Vanessa’s passing has severely affected us as I have not been able to return to work and my father’s business is suffering.”
A statement from Van Rensburg’s ex-fiancé and father of their two children, Cliff Cunliffe, was already read into the court record, detailing the impact of her death on their eight-year-old daughter.
The matter was rolled over to Thursday for the continuation of the bail hearing.
