Police in Graaff-Reinet have opened an enquiry docket after a building was completely destroyed by fire.

Captain Bradley Rawlinson says a take-away shop, Belinda's Cafe, was operating from the building, situated in Caledon Street with people also living upstairs.

He says they are not entirely sure who lived in the building but residents were evacuated during Wednesday night’s blaze and no fatalities or injuries were reported.

Captain Rawlinson says while a case has not been opened yet, police will conduct a preliminary investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

If the investigation proves negligence, intent or otherwise, a criminal case will be registered.
