BCM steps up on spaza shop raids

BCM

The Buffalo City Metro will intensify its food-selling operations by increasing raids to three times a week starting on Tuesday.

BCM Spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya says that thus far, the metro has been conducting operations twice a week to ensure that food-selling outlets comply with health, environmental, and safety standards.

He says a third day has now been added, and operations will be conducted every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The Metro is concerned about the amount of illegal pesticides and banned poisonous substances sold around many spaza shops. It is warning communities to refrain from buying these.

Ngwenya says the Metro has already reviewed its policies and Bylaws and conducted workshops with key provincial and national stakeholders to improve raids and make them more effective.

He says this includes ensuring that those who are transgressing the law are arrested and prosecuted successfully.

During a special council meeting last week, the motion was approved for the metro to intensify operations and come up with solutions to issues of ownership and management of raids.

In September, three children, aged between one and four, have died of suspected food poisoning in East London.
