Bay advocate back in the dock on fraud charges

A well-known Bay advocate appeared in the dock at the city's magistrates court on Monday on charges of fraud and corruption.

Siphokazi Cubungu, 46, is facing fraud charges amounting to nearly R200,000.

She allegedly created fake invoices for legal work that was never done, and then allegedly bypassed internal controls to have the money paid into a private account.

The State alleges that the payments were made in March 2022 as well as in May, August, September, October, and November of the following year.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali earlier confirmed that Cubungu's co-accused in the matter is Dumisani Zwane.

It is understood that Zwane, allegedly in cahoots with Cubungy, worked in the office of the State Attorney.

Cubungu grabbed the headlines when she represented Luthando Siyoni, the convicted middleman in the murder of Bay schoolteacher Jayde Panayiotou.

The case against Cubungu was postponed to 14 July for further investigation.

She is out on bail of R3,000.
