There was a high police presence in the perimetres of the George magistrates court area on Tuesday, where the two men accused of shooting and killing underworld kingpin Mark Lifman made their first appearance.

Lifman was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Garden Route Mall on Sunday morning.

Police say the shooting took place at around 11:30, and the suspects fled in a white VW Polo with a CY registration number.

Police confirmed that the two men are South African Johannes Jacobs, 53, and -year-old 37-year-old Gerhard Bezuidenhout.

During the proceedings on Tuesday, the suspects asked that they be kept in solitary confinement until their next appearance.

The magistrate denied that request.

The court ordered that no photos of the accused be taken and no photos of them be published on any platforms at this stage.

Lifman, and alleged Sexy Boys gang leader Jerome 'Donkie' Booysen and their co-accused were meant to appear in the Cape Town High Court on Monday for the murder of Brian Wainstein, dubbed the international steroid kingpin, who was gunned down in his Constantia home on 18 August 2017.

Wainstein was shot in front of his partner and a two-year-old child.

The gunmen took three cell phones before they fled, leaving the wife and child unharmed.

Lifman was facing multiple serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, money laundering, and gang-related offences.

He, along with security company owner Andre Naude, Booysen, and several others, face a plethora of charges linked to alleged underworld battles for the control of nightclubs.

The matter was postponed until the 13th of November for the state to gather bail information.
