The Hawks, based in Pretoria, served a 45-year-old suspect with a court summons to appear in the city's Magistrates Court next month.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo says it is alleged that on 2 March 2020, the Director of Forensic Audit Unit at the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development received information about a certain service provider who requested a meeting.
The suspect approached an official attached to the Information Management System Unit within the department regarding a tender.
He says it was reported that the official met with the service provider, where the suspect allegedly tried to influence him for gratification in the bidding of a tender process estimated to be R120 million.
Lieutenant Colonel Singo says the official declined the request and left the meeting. However, the suspect allegedly followed him and placed a package stacked with R50,000 inside the official's vehicle before driving off.
He says the matter was reported to the Hawks for further investigation, which culminated in the summons being served on Wednesday.
The suspect must now appear in court on the 10th of July.
