Mozambican prison escapee arrested in Sandton

A Mozambican national who was one of over 1000 inmates who escaped from a prison in Maputo in December when the country experienced unrest, has been arrested in Johannesburg.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said Nelson Massango was rearrested on Wednesday at a car hire dealership in Sandton.

She said he may be linked to several cases of motor vehicle theft in Gauteng, where he would rent 4x4 bakkies and smuggle them into Mozambique for sale.

Mathe said Massango had been serving a lengthy jail term in Maputo following his 2015 conviction for murder, when he escaped with the other prisoners.

She said the national commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, welcomed his arrest and said South Africa would not be a “hideout” for criminals.
