Police divers are searching for a 37-year-old fisherman who went missing near Hibberdene on the KZN South Coast, following a reported shark incident on Friday.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says it was reported that three local fishermen were in the water near a school of sardines when one of them disappeared underwater after a shark appeared to surface where the man was fishing.
"It appears that one friend attempted to intervene, but it is believed that he was confronted by at least two sharks and he retreated to the shoreline", he said.
Lambinon says it is believed that the sharks were feeding on the sardines at the time.
Police have opened an investigation and are conducting an ongoing search.
