Police in Mbombela in the Mpumalanga Province are investigating a fatal shooting incident which took place in the early hours of Thursday morning near the Rugby Club in White River.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane says police received information shortly after midnight, and upon arrival at the scene, they discovered that multiple individuals had sustained gunshot wounds.
He says one person was declared dead on the scene while two others were transported to the hospital.
Lieutenant Ndubane says the motive for the shooting is unknown, and a dedicated team under the leadership of the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Province has been established to probe the matter further.
Meanwhile, the White River Rugby Club has identified the deceased as 21-year-old Pieter Burger.
According to the local publication LowVelder, Burger sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Two other men, Arno van Niekerk and Marco Schalekamp, were critically injured.
LowVelder reports that Van Niekerk sustained gunshot wounds to the abdomen, chest, back, left shoulder and the left side of his head while Schalekamp suffered gunshot wounds to both cheeks, with the bullet entering one side and exiting the other, impacting his cheekbone, as well as injuries to his shoulders and neck.
They further reported that police recovered firearms and several spent cartridges on the scene.
