Two foreign nationals who allegedly tried to smuggle drugs and other contraband through the Groblersbrug Port of Entry this week are expected to appear in court today.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says the 45-year-old truck driver and his 30-year-old female passenger were travelling in a Scania truck with Mpumalanga number plates, claiming to transport maize meal that had been cleared for outbound movement.
He says during a routine inspection, officers noticed several black plastic bags concealed beneath the maize.
Upon a further search, officials found white plastic lunch boxes containing a crystal-like substance, as well as bags of compressed dagga, and multiple bottles of Benylin with codeine.
Brigadier Mashaba states that the estimated value of the illicit goods is R2.6 million, while the truck, valued at R850,000, was also seized.
He says the duo will appear in the Phalala Magistrates' Court on Friday to face charges related to attempting to smuggle illicit goods and contravening the Medicines and Related Substances Act.
