Science has decided to drop a few cents on the subject of staying close friends with your ex.

According to a study, staying friends with an ex greatly depends on why you want to continue the relationship in the first place.

In the study, the researchers found that are four main reasons that someone stays friends with an ex after a breakup:

The first reason researchers found was staying in touch because of lingering romantic feelings which can result in a devastating friendship.

The second that they don't want to lose an ex partner's emotional support, their trust and advice and these friendships tended to be positive but don’t last long.

The third reason is practical which often happens when people have children together or shared finances which means they have to maintain contact.

And the fourth and last is civility which is when someone might not want to hurt someone else's feelings after being with them.

Both practical and civility friendships last a long time and are usually positive.
