An alleged hijacker is fighting for his life in a Port Elizabeth Hospital after causing an horrific accident in Target Kloof, Walmer on Friday morning

Police Spokesperson Captain Johan Rheeder says an unknown man hijacked a woman of her VW Polo in Parliament Street, Central and then sped off towards Target Kloof.

The victim said she was pulled out of the vehicle and it happened so fast that she did not even see if the suspect was armed.

The man then sped through Target Kloof at high speed before hitting a pole and an SUV.

Captain Rheeder says the occupants of the white Nissan SUV were a couple in their early forties and their 15-year-old daughter.

They were about to turn into River Road when the VW smashed into the back right-hand side of their vehicle.

The hijacked car spun around in the process and hit a truck coming down the hill.

The Jaws of life had to be used to free the suspected hijacker from the wreckage and he is currently in a critical condition in hospital.

Police are investigating a case of hijacking and reckless and negligent driving.

Rheeder says the suspect is currently under police guard and the occupants of the SUV were treated by paramedics on the scene.
