The entertainment area outside the Powerboat Club at the North End Lake in Port Elizabeth erupted in flames on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire department was on the scene within minutes and the fire has already been extinguished.

Brendan Kelly is a current committee member and former Commodore of the club and told Algoa FM News the damage has been extensive.

"They have the fire more or less under control but it looks like our entertainment area somehow caught alight. It's still unexplained at this stage but there is significant damage to the clubhouse as well, you cannot believe the amount of heat that went into the clubhouse," he said.

Kelly said that there were luckily no injuries."We are still picking up the pieces and making contingency plans because life has to carry on obviously."
