A 41- year-old man is in serious condition in a Port Elizabeth hospital after he was shot several times in what appears to have been an attempted robbery.

Captain Andre Beetge said a private contractor was busy delivering furniture at a house in Ngwendu Street, Kwazakele, at around 9 o'clock on Wednesday morning when five suspects approached them.

The 32- year-old house owner as well as his 48- year- old neighbour were helping to carry a couch into the house at the time while 41-year- old Ernest Melville was keeping an eye in the yard.

Captain Beetge said the home owner dropped the couch and ran inside when the suspects approached and then heard several shots being fired.

On his return to the yard, he found the wounded Melville lying at the gate, as well as his 48- year- old neighbour who had been stabbed in the arm and hand.

The suspects fled empty handed.

Paramedics treated the victims at the scene and then transported them to Livingstone Hospital for further treatment.

An attempted murder case was opened at the Kwazakele police station.
