Bobani tells supporters at court to "sign a register" to reap their reward

Axed Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Mongameli Bobani made a promise to reward those who came out to support him at the Port Elizabeth High Court on Tuesday.

He made the remarks while addressing a crowd of about 200 supporters, mainly dressed in United Democratic Movement party regalia outside the court.

Speaking in isiXhosa, the embattled former Mayor asked his supporters to fill in a register so that everyone who was there could be rewarded.

"Ongekhoyo uyakutya ukungabikho kwakhe", said Bobani to the cheering crowd.

Bobani is fighting against his removal from the Mayorship after he was booted out of office during a council meeting last week, on Thursday. He received only two of 118 votes in council during a motion of no confidence against him.

His defence team believes the decision to remove him from office was invalid as he had not been notified of the intention to vote him out 10 days prior the meeting, a move which they say is in contravention of Section 58 of the Municipal Structures Act.

DA Councillors' Athol Trollip and Morne Styen as well as Acting Municipal Manager, Buyelwa Mafaya are among those who have indicated that they would oppose Bobani's reinstatement.

Meanwhile, Acting Mayor Thsonono Buyeye and Noxolo Nqwazi cited they would abide by the court's decision.

Bobani's legal team, which includes renowned defence attorney, Advocate Terry Price was granted a certificate of urgency for the matter to be pushed up the court roll, however, some of the opposing respondents argued the urgency of the matter.

They also claimed to have not been given sufficient time to file opposing documents.

Acting Judge, Lisa Ntsepe ordered for all opposing papers to be filed by end of business on Wednesday.

The matter was postponed to Friday for arguments.

Bobani could not be reached for comment.
