Graaff Reinet police have launched an investigating after the body of a baby was found in a cupboard of a house in Kingwell Street.

Police said it was understood that a 22-year-old woman gave birth on Sunday and that the baby may have been still-born.

The grim discovery was made on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Captain Bradley Rawlinson says the woman, who was initially identified as a teenager, still lives with her parents.

The young mother delivered the baby before wrapping it in a towel and placing it inside a box.

Rawlinson says she concealed the birth from her parents by hiding the baby's body in a cupboard.

A post mortem will now be conducted on the baby to determine whether or not it was still alive when it was born.

Rawlinson says once the results of the post mortem have been received a decision on the case going forward will be made.
