George Municipality’s Integrated Public Transport Network will be one of the focus areas of a probe into allegations of maladministration, fraud and corruption at the Municipality.

The Western Cape Department of Local Government said in a statement on Monday that it had been tasked to investigate these claims, including any other serious malpractice at George Municipality.

The decision was made following an assessment of the allegations that were brought to the attention of the Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell.

He said he believed that they required further investigation.

“This investigation will focus on, amongst other matters, the George Integrated Public Transport Network and irregular appointments made at the Municipality. No stone will be left unturned.”

Bredell said the Western Cape Government prides itself on taking strong action against any allegations of corruption and acting on wrongdoing without fear or favour.

“We will see this through to the end and we hope to have the matter concluded as soon as possible,” he said.

George Municipality is expected to comment on Tuesday.
