Japanese national in court for being in possession of protected plants

A Japanese national is behind bars in the Northern Cape for being in the possession of a protected plant species.

Hawks Northern Cape spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, says 40-year-old Kazuhiro Mizobuchi, appeared in court in Kathu on Monday.

She says he was arrested on the 9th of May in a joint operation by the Hawks, Kimberley Flying Squad and a Western Cape National Conservation team.

He was found in the possession of 53 indigenous succulent plants Euphorbia, which are related to the cactus family.

The vehicle he was travelling alone in, was also confiscated.

Mnisi says Mizobuchi has been remanded in custody and is due back in court on the 20th
