Ian Olivier and Johann du Preez on the NPO's fundraising project - 'Pedal-Walk-Vasbyt'!
The SA Defence Force Association (SADFA) is a Military Veterans Organization established for Military Veterans to act on behalf of and in the interest of all its members. SADFA is a registered non-profit organization (NPO) and are managed by its National Executive Council.
Men and women who made sacrifices and served their country with honor and dignity, who served their country unselfishly, deserve to be recognised, remembered and taken care of. The South African Defence Force Association (SADFA) was established in February 2009 with this sole purpose.
SADFA is structured on a hierarchy with four levels, i.e. national, demographic regions (Provinces), regional (Sectors) and in smaller areas (Units). We have 12 651 SADFA members registered, of which 1 876 reside in the Eastern Cape. Within these structures, we execute different projects to support our members. One of our projects is Project “Sandpatrys”. This is our relief fund project to support our military veterans in need. Project “Rooivalk” is a cycling and walking fundraiser.
Our Vision Our Mission
To make a definite impact in the lives of our members through upholding the ethos, values, and pride of the professional military culture.
OUR UPCOMING FUNDRAISING PROJECT :
Pedal-Walk-Vasbyt : Well-known GQ businessman Ian Olivier, is one of two cyclists riding from Sandton to Oudtshoorn in 14 days. The second cyclist is Adriaan van der Westhuizen, and is like Ian, no stranger to using his wheels to raise money for a good cause.
IN IAN'S OWN WORDS : "We are cycling unassisted (no backup vehicle) on Mountain Bikes (not road or ebikes and we have off-road tyres --- which makes it more difficult)
We are soldiers from the Infantry School in Oudtshoorn 1982/3.We also did border duty together in the then SWA and in Angola. We leave Sandton on 17 May and will end off in Vic Bay on 31 May. This was a favorite place we would frequent when we had short passes and were allowed out of the Oudtshoorn base for a night or two, meaning for troops to go home was not an option unless you lived nearby.
On 26 May about 6 guys will leave Calitzdorp and walk a Vasbyt route, arriving in Oudtshoorn on 30 May.
We are all in our early 60s …. (which I like to think is the new 30s ???? )"
