Greenpeace Africa

Kaycee Roussou catches up with Shumirai Zizhou for a compelling chat about the shocking state of our drinking water.

We are an independent environmental campaigning non-profit. We use non-violent, creative confrontation to expose environmental injustices globally, and to bring forth the solutions which are essential to a green and peaceful future.

One of our current campaigns is the water crisis in South Africa.

Water pollution comes at a real human cost.

432 BILLION litres of sewage enters our rivers in South Africa every day, that’s 50,000 litres EVERY second. Not only is this devastating to nature, it’s contaminating our drinking water and causing a multitude of diseases. This is shameful on the part of government.

What we’re witnessing is more than just a policy failure. It’s an act of environmental and social injustice. It’s the slow violence of neglect, disrepair, and corruption,  and it’s costing people their health, their livelihoods, and their futures.

At Greenpeace Africa, we believe it’s time to act. And not with band-aid solutions. What’s needed is urgent and far-reaching change:

  • Massive investment to rebuild water infrastructure
  • Transparent governance to eliminate corruption and inefficiency
  • Legal accountability for those responsible for this collapse
  • And the amplification of grassroots voices demanding justice

Because water is not a privilege. It is a basic human right..

Our Current Water Campaign Project:  This Responsive Campaign emphasises the ‘Forgotten People’, the grassroots communities that often fall to the wayside and are the worst affected by the water crisis in South Africa.

Section 27 of the South African Constitution guarantees the right to access water and a safe environment. The National Water Act and Water Services Act spells out the government’s responsibilities. This government is failing its people.

Want to make a real difference right now?

Be a volunteer. Companies and individuals can make donations. Share on social media. Sign a pledge. It is these seemingly small acts of courage that start making a real impact in the world.

We are not powerless. You can raise your voice. You can help drive the change. Sign the petition to demand justice, accountability, and access to clean water for all.
