R50 000 for CANSA on World Cancer Day

Posted on Friday, February 05, 2010 at 08:40

The Boardwalk Algoa Fm Big Walk for Cancer drew record numbers when it was held on October 24, 2009. Over 5700 participants took part in the event – double the number from previous years – and R50 000 was raised for CANSA.

“This is one of our most exciting fundraisers of the year,” says Joan Duarte, project facilitator for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) in the Eastern Cape. “The money raised goes towards CANSA’s various services in the Eastern Cape.”

The Boardwalk and Algoa FM will officially be handing over the money to the Northern Districts CANSA association on Thursday, February 04.

“We are extremely grateful for this donation and will certainly be putting it to good use,” says Mrs Gladys Bowers, treasurers of the Northern District CANSA association. “We currently put together toiletry packs for cancer patients at government hospitals which include things like soap, toothpaste and creams. We are wanting to expand this programme by adopting an entire cancer ward at one of the provincial hospitals. We are currently in negotiations for this to take place.”
