With regards to the water crisis, i do not see it getting any better and not only because of the lack of support from the public, but most importantly from the lack of support and knowledge of the municipalities. In Grahamstown, people are still watering garderns, etc. We had a municipal worker leave the water pump open for 3 days to supply water to surounding farmers, which was a waste of water as that resiviour overflowed. Our municipal workers do not repair burst pipes immidiately after being reported therefore also contributing to water wastage. I think our biggest concern is actually the underqualified staff at the municipality which has lead to the situation that we are in. Grahamstown has received no warnings or anything with regards to the water problem and no updates on how bad the water supply actualy is from our municipality. We were just informed of water restrictions, and even then, there has been nothing forthcoming from that. I feel a plan of action needs to be brought in rationing each household to a certain amount of water per day until the water crisis is sorted out. Another problem is that in our locations, water is not an expense and therefore taps are permanently left running. This is a major problem which also needs to be addressed.
What has happened to the Orange River Scheme? I have a hunch that we have been cut off from this. I think it is about time that we stopped playing cat and mouse and get to the point. What has been done to improve our Dams since 1994. Our population and water usage has doubled I am sure. Everywhere I ride in Swide Njoka Chetty and those areas water is continually running down the Streets for months on end but the public and Municipality seem to have a dont care attitude. I think it is high time that we really experience a serious drought then maybe everyone will have a new respect for the most essential commodity in life. Lets work together and show concern.
I agree that where water costs nothing the biggest wastage occurs and whats more we who are being charged for our water have it rationed and even heavy fines imposed or penalties are imposed on a stepped tariff system. I do not know if water useage is recorded in various areas but if it is not it would be interesting to monitor. The whole system is one of wait and see what happens. I have been without water for two days in the dessert. You do not want to go there. Lets put heads together and come up with some solutions to save this precious life sustaining resource
When it's brown flush it down! When it's yellow leave it to mellow!
Water scarcity will increase for various reasons. Port Elizabeth as a coastal city should consider sea water Desalination as a fresh water source. House holders can even install their own home based units. Access to seawater could be done via pipeline (where possible) or manually transported home. Drinking water being the foremost concern, washing water secondary but also required. Small home and larger land based units are available. Please have a look at the following website: http://www.echotecwatermakers.com/?gclid=CIes_sze5J8CFZEA4wodlS_cHQ This site has excellent info in this regard with complete downloadable PDF files and schematic drawings. The units appear to be very high quality and prices are given as well. A small home based unit would be ideal for those folks who can afford. Desalination on such a small scale takes some doing and it appears that the manufaturers have done their home work! When the water runs out - this could be a lifesaver. The units have proven their reliability at sea on boats and ships. Certainly worthy of consideration. As an Engineering Planning specialist I can see the benefit. Comments will be appreciated. Take care and God Bless.

There is an advertisement on air at the moment that says that water is a gift form the gods. What a load of rubbish!!! There is only one God! That is probably the reason why no rain has been sent yet, because most of the eastern capers are praying to the wrong god. And not only must we pray for rain but we must pray to God for forgiveness and repent our sins. Then only will the heaven open and God will send what we need when we need it. It is not that we are wasting but that we are sinning! Good luck and I thank God in advance for opening peoples ears so that they can hear and realise that we must ask Him for forgiveness. Praise Him!
Why don't we come together and not wash our cars for the month of June. Show your support by writing on the dust on your back windscreen "Saving PE one dirty car at a time"
