Other than being his birthday, Mandela Day includes a series of events invo
lving interactive art, entertainment, music, film, educational outreach and community service.
The aim of Mandela Day is to inspire people around the globe to embrace their individual power to make an imprint and help change the world around them for the better.
Mr. Mandela has spent 67 years making the world a better place.
And they’re asking you for just 67 minutes.
In an effort to celebrate the legacy of South Africa’s former President Nelson Mandela, 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation are urging people all over the world to join them in a bid to create an official Mandela Day, which would be held on Mr Mandela’s birthday each year, July 18.
Mandela Day is an annual celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and a global call to action for people to recognize their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.
“We would be honoured if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace and reconciliation,” according to a statement issued on Mr Mandela’s behalf.
It is their hope to empower people to find opportunities that address social issues
such as:
Human Rights & Civil Liberties
Hunger & Poverty
Education & Literacy
Health Issues & Medicine
Environment, Ecology & Energy Conservation
Social Enterprise & Economic Development
This could mean any number of volunteer activities in your community, including, feeding the homeless, being a big brother/big sister, or visiting someone who is sick.
Why not go a little further and stay involved year-round?
Born on July 18, 1918 in Transkei, South Africa, Nelson Mandela has devoted his life to peacefully fighting for freedom and social justice for all.
After 27 years as prisoner 46664 under the then-Apartheid government in South Africa, Mr Mandela emerged to reconcile with his oppressors and lead the country peacefully through its transition from a 46-year era of segregation.
Mr Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with then president Frederik Willem de Klerk in 1993. In 1994, Mr Mandela was elected as the first president of a democratic South Africa. Over the course of the years, he has been awarded more than 60 humanitarian awards from around the world.
Mr Mandela’s life personifies the idea that one person has the power to make a difference and leave their unique imprint on the world.

THESE CHARITIES NEED YOUR HELP!
If you can help out with any one of their requirements, please submit below how YOU can help and add your details!
The Uitenhage LIONS and LEOS Club will celebrate Mandela Day on his birthday on Saturday, 18 July 2009 by dedicating their time and effort to serving their community with a Crazy Cupcake Charity Drive. Whilst President Jacob Zuma plans to spend time with the elderly in Ivory Park, Gauteng; both the Uitenhage Lions and Leos Club will be baking and icing almost 1000 cupcakes to be distributed on their visit to 12 charities on the day. The charities to be visited will consist of children's homes and old age homes in the Uitenhage and Despatch area. The Lions and Leos will dedicate 67 minutes of their time in service of others on Mandela‘s birthday. Each minute represents a year of Mandela‘s life spent fighting for freedom and justice in South Africa. According to The Herald Newspaper: “Mandela Day is not a public holiday but a day devoted to service. This day aims to celebrate Mandela's 67 years in politics from his pivotal role in the anti-apartheid struggle, to his presidency and finally his work as mediator in peace talks and as an Aids activist.” Make an imprint in someone else’s life by joining the LIONS and LEOS on their visit to these charities on Saturday 18 July 2009 where you can be part of this sweet initiative and spend time with the children or elderly. The more volunteers there are the more charities can be visited. For more information contact Deisre Cloete (Lions Representative) at 084 4413 838 or Sharne' Knoetze (LEO President) at 084 5496 551.
Nelson Mandela Scouts will host a "signing and pledging" day at the Algoa Sea Scout Den (St Geroges Park), from 10am to 3pm. Everyone is invited to come and sign their name on a huge birthday card for Madiba and pledge their commitment. Can we get 67 people to pledge 67 minutes? Can we get 670, 6700? For more information contact Lisbet (084 5580888) or visit the Nelson Mandela Scouts website : www.scoutbook.co.za.
Nelson Mandela Scouts will have the list available of all things needed for the various charities listed above, at our "signing and pledging" day. We pledge to encourage visitors to prioritise their commitment to suit the requests of these charities.
Happy Birthday Mr Mandela. You are the greatest
I am very grateful for many things that others have done for me in my time of need and have therefore decided to add some value to those currently less fortunate than myself. My contribution is insignificant when one considers what Madiba sacrificed for what he believed in, however it is my contribution to those in need. I have chosen "Operation Smiles" to receive my contribution, and pledge 10 items of each being tog bags, pygamas, slippers and gowns. May the beneficiaries sleep well.
