Agriculture stakeholders have expressed hugely mixed opinions, following President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Address on February.
Zuma did emphasise that agriculture was one of the strategic focus areas for government’s Nine Point Plan to reignite economic growth.
However, comments around land reform percentages, drought aid and radical socio-economic transformation have left a bitter taste for some.
Agri SA Executive Director, Omri van Zyl says, for example, Zuma’s statement that only 8.9% of land has been transferred into the hands of black people does not paint the full picture.
Van Zyl says the irony, is that 93% of the beneficiaries prefer financial compensation and not the land.
